Do you love reading about local entrepreneurs? How they got their start and what motivates them? Ekim’s Top Picks is just what you are looking for! We will interview Lakeland business owners for all the interesting details!

Our first Top Pick is Broadway Real Estate Services! I’m honored to have Matt Clark, President, as the first interviewee. I was extremely excited to hear his answers and he did not disappoint! Read below as he shares his views on entrepreneurship, how he navigates fear, and what motivates him.

How did you get your idea or concept for the business? What made you choose this type of business?

I left the practice of law to start a real estate company. I had always felt more entrepreneurial than legal minded and had been dabbling in some side business hustles. Ultimately came together with my brother-in-law and father to start Broadway, as we all felt the future of Central Florida real estate would be bright.

What was your mission at the outset?

Mission at the outset was all about growth. Wanted to buy distressed assets at the time to add to our long-term holdings. We never had the intent to sell anything and still feel the same way today.

What is unique about your business?

In our storage company, StoreRight, we really value our employees and have lots of longer-term facility managers. That is somewhat unique in the storage industry and we pride ourselves on a great company culture where long term employees are appreciated.

Does your company help the community?

Yes. We highly value our local community here in Lakeland. We give back both financially and with a lot of volunteer effort.

To what do you attribute your success?

Hard work and dedication. There are no shortcuts to building a good company.

What motivates you?

I am motivated financially to put myself and my family in a good position for our future. I am also motivated by fear; I don’t want to fail and refuse to do so.

What is your greatest fear, and how do you manage fear?

Failing as a business. We work hard to prevent this from happening. We also have a long-term outlook on the future and don’t stress too much on the day to day ups and downs as long as the longer trends are positive.

If you had one piece of advice to college graduates, or someone just starting out, what would it be?

Put the work in. Don’t be afraid of hard work and effort, it will be rewarded in the end.

What is your favorite aspect of being an entrepreneur?

I like that I am largely in control of my own future. I can make decisions to either make things happen or not and am not reliant on a boss or manager guiding my future path.

There you go, folks. I look inside a great entrepreneur’s mind. Lakeland is lucky to have you, Matt!
